Celebrate Safely This Independence Day with Derek Hays Injury Law

Independence Day is a time to come together with family, friends, and neighbors to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as Americans.  Around Georgia, fireworks displays, backyard cookouts, and festive travel plans bring our community to life each July 4th. But amidst the excitement, it’s crucial to keep safety a priority.  At Derek Hays Injury Law, we want your holiday to be full of joy and free from accidents that can turn celebration into tragedy.  Whether you’re grilling, traveling, or hosting, here’s how to enjoy the day while protecting yourself and others.

Fireworks and Grills: Powerful Traditions. Real Dangers.

Fireworks are a beloved part of July 4th, but they also present serious hazards.  Every year, emergency rooms across Georgia treat burns, eye injuries, and worse, all due to improper handling of fireworks.  Even sparklers can reach temperatures of 3,000°F, making them unsafe for children.

Our advice?  Skip the backyard fireworks and attend a professional display in Gwinnett County, such as the show at the Lawrenceville Lawn.  You will get the spectacle without the risk.

Grilling is another key holiday tradition. To stay safe:

Set grills at least 10 feet away from your house, deck, or tree branches.
Check for grease buildup that can trigger flare ups.
Never leave a lit grill unattended, especially with children nearby.

Stay Safe on Georgia’s Roads

Holidays often mean more traffic and more risk. Between long drives, holiday parties, and distracted drivers, accidents spike during this time of year.  To stay safe:

  • Buckle up every time.
  • Avoid distractions like texting or adjusting GPS while driving.
  • Leave early to avoid speeding due to time pressure.
  • Do not drink and drive. Use a rideshare app, designate a sober driver, or stay put if needed.

If someone else’s reckless driving leads to injury, Derek Hays Injury Law is here to help you understand your rights and pursue justice.

Hosting Comes with Legal Responsibility

Throwing a Fourth of July party?  As a host, you may be legally liable if a guest drinks too much and causes an accident on their way home.  To protect your guests and yourself:

  • Offer food and non-alcoholic drinks throughout the event.
  • Stop serving alcohol well before the end of the party.
  • Encourage guests to plan safe rides home.
  • If your home has a pool, enforce strict supervision, especially with children present.

These steps are not just thoughtful.  They could help prevent serious injury and even save a life.
